Emma walked slowly through the night in almost total darkness, guiding herself with a single flickering candle… towards death. She smelled the brine of the sea and heard, more strongly, the clash of the waves below at the base of the cliff. She closed her eyes lifting her face up to the sky. There was no moon tonight. She wished she could have seen it one last time. She guessed that was another small punishment she deserved.
Another tear trailed down her cheek, and she was amazed at how many tears she had left in her. She felt the warm tear turn into a cold trail of sorrow marking her skin.
